Kate,
When I sprained my ankle about 2-3 years ago I had/have rsd in my left hand, arm, shoulder and neck I thought there was something more than a sprain because when i went down I heard a couple of pops and I couldn't get up. I hollered for my daughter and she helped me up so I could get into the house. I got my 2 crutches and called the docs office. I got in right away they did the x-ray and i was told it was severe sprain. The doc told me NO ICE,no ace raps, just use your foot so the rsd may not spread into your foot. He told me it is necessary to use the injured area no matter what just to use crutches and he would do a recheck every so often. My sprain was so bad in my ankle that my whole entire foot including my toes were swollen and black and blue. but my doc told me to use crutches so you aren't putting to much weight on your foot but to use it and day by day it got a little better but it took a VERY LONG time to heal. So i am not sure what your docs are like but mine refused to ice it which is good thank heavens but they also refused to wrap it. They said it needs to be used as much as possible so it doesn't become stiff and non useable.
Hope this helps. Take care.

Sincerely,
Tracy Tracy
