I am not sure what to tell you not knowing the history....
My step father sent a CHristmas card, but is ignorant enough to say I "cannot have my OWn stamp albums back because of what I did to my family." (prosecuting brother for stalking, threats and abuse).

He is trying to clear his concious and that is not right, but it justifies his means to feel he will go to heaven for sending the card.

So I don't know if he really is close to you, sounds like he cares, or is he playing both you and the son?

Maybe just a brief note, no further information he could share.
It does sound like a very kind considerate note to you...
