I have a mirror image of your experience. Both internist recommended follow up ultrasound, neither recommended needle aspiration. Both said they are extremely common in my age group (53).
Your doc(s) are ulimately responsible and know your condition so follow their advise but I would at least see an endocrinologist for second opinion!
