Attributional Style and Depression in Adolescents with Asperger Syndrome
by Gena P. Barnhill , Brenda Smith Myles

"Given the prevalence of depression in adolescents and young adults with Asperger syndrome, the investigation of attributional or causal explanations appears to be one approach to understanding their social and motivational patterns. This study was designed to investigate general attributional or explanatory style and level of depression in individuals between 12 and 18 years of age who have been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome."

"Given the alarming concern regarding depression in adolescents and young adults with Asperger syndrome (Attwood, 1998; Ghaziuddin et al., 1998; Ryan, 1992; Tantam, 1991), it is important to determine whether these individuals have a learned helplessness style that may put them at risk for depression."
