Celiac disease and thyroid disease are both at the headwaters of all autoimmune disease.

For autoimmune disease to exist the immune system has to get confused. Immune function relies on proper function of the thymus gland. Like all organs the thymus relies on transduction nerves. Transduction nerves in all organs operate in a properly prepared medium of potassium ion channels. The orexin nerve system is responsible for preparing and maintaining these channels.

The orexin system is centered in the brain's hypothalamus, the same area of the brain which controls thyroid function. A virus attacks the hypothalamus, and the body responds in two ways. You get thyroid disease, and your immune system starts attacking food proteins and everything they touch.
