Default Houston Folks - Memorial Service Ride for MS Society Volunteer

Not sure how many of you have heard of this or knew him, but long-time MS Society volunteer Stafford Campbell was hit and killed by a car that ran a stop sign while riding his bike near Waller this weekend. He rode in many MS150s and was a dedicated volunteer for the MS society and the Northwest Cycling Club.

We are planning a cyclist honor guard ride to his memorial service this Saturday. I am posting an email with details below. If you want to participate or know somebody who might, please pass this information on and distribute it far and wide to any other riders or MS folks you know. For those who can't or don't ride, you can always put on an MS society shirt, park at the church, and line up with the riders to show your support.

The memorial service is at 1st Baptist Church on the katy Fwy near N. Post Oak and the service is at 11am. The ride will start from Memorial Park near the ball fields (I will post a map when I get home) at around 9:15am. The rest of the details are shown below.

If you aren't sure what we mean by an honor guard ride, see the blog post linked below for a ride that was done in San Antonio earlier this year for a couple killed while riding a tandem.

WE ENCOURAGE YOU FORWARDING THIS MESSAGE TO YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, TEAM MEMBERS, OTHER TEAMS, ETC…LET’S HONOR STAFFORD THE WAY HE ALWAYS HONORED US!

Last Saturday, a long-time MS Society activist and volunteer, Stafford Campbell was killed while riding his bike in Waller. After Mark Neagli spoke with Stafford’s wife and daughter (Joy and Katy) last night and they said they would be honored and deeply touched to have an honor guard at Stafford’s memorial this Saturday. In the word’s of Joy, “Stafford said when he died he wanted to go out doing what he loved…and he did”. In order to do this right, to honor Stafford, as we arrive we will line up, helmets off, over our hearts.

Joy would love for us to be in place by 10:00 so that as guests arrive we are there ready to usher them in…to honor her sweet husband. The plan is to have the cyclists stage at Memorial Park and be on the road by 9:15. Please recommend that riders arrive by about 8:30 so we can get organized. This will be a slow ride, two abreast and we are arranging for police protection at major turns. It will be around 35-45F so make sure people dress appropriately as we will be standing there for about an hour. The preference is that we all ride back to the park together for safety reasons.

If you plan on attending the memorial, you may want to park at the church and have a change of clothes. You can still line up with the cyclists (minus the bike) and then make your way into the chapel.
