What a useful, informative thread.
There's no doubt that many communities experience the occasional "troll". I'd like to add that it's really important how a situation is dealt with when we encounter someone we believe to be a troll.
I agree that responding/reacting to a perceived troll will "feed" exactly whatever it is that they might be seeking/demanding. It can quickly add to the intensity of a situation as well.
That said, I think good action that can be taken is to PM administration as soon as you feel there's cause to think someone a troll. When you do, it's a good idea to give as much detail as you can, including links, so that the administration can look at what's been happening as well as what to watch for in the future. If the behavior continues, keep PM'ing...
