That is what it seems to be for many tests. That is how the 'normal' range is determined. They take 5% above and below a dotted line and everything else is
normal'. ( or 4 or 7% etc) So too bad if you fall into the 6% range in 1995 to find out they change the range in 1997 but don't tell you ( as happened to me re Hypothyroid)

For eg - TSH for thyroid in UK is set at >5 or even 10 but many labs in Europe, Aust and USA set > 3.3 ... ( normal TSH is about 1) In UK thyroid meds are 'free' ... so they raised the TSH range so less people can get them! Its all about money ..not health..
