For a person with CMT. The Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) trials that are going on are for CMT1A which is the most common type of CMT. The results will not be known for several years. Some trials (in another country) for children are over and it did not work.

Just because Vitamin C is available over the counter does not mean that it is safe for a person with CMT. But if a CMTer chooses to take it in high doses, it is considered a drug. A CMTer should definitely check with their doctor before doing this as there can be side effects such as acidifying your urine and a slight chance of kidney stones which are very painful. So if a CMTer chooses to take 2000 mg or 4000 mg a day, talk to your doctor before doing this, depending on your medical history.
