I wish I could tell you what it is. I can only tell you that I go through that too. I use melatonin and it help quite a bit. I don't like to use prescription drugs for sleep because they can become habit forming and then stop working. I used benadryl for a long time but after a while it stops working as well. Melatonin does seem to work for me and has some other benefits. Do a google search on it. That may be something you might want to try.
