You might be interested here on this thread to see animations that illustrate how bone is affected by various osteoporosis treatments.

The bisphosphonates mechanism of action was known for years before these new reports have appeared:

What basically happens is the the osteoblasts (the cells that reincorporate calcium into bone), stop working.
