My 9 yr old has been suffering from this for the last few years.
Being a special needs child she has alot of anxiety issues, afraid it will hurt to poop then she holds it.. it is a vicious cycle.

What i find helps her a bit is Lansoyl, its a red jelly type in a jar.. she loves the taste.

I'm in Canada so i'm not sure if its available where you are.

I've also used senekot when it gets really bad but she has to stay home from school for at least a couple days until it gets into her system and she is able to go to the bathroom..she won't empty her bowels the first day but she does have some "leakage".
