I am in Washington State, which legalized medical marijuana in 1998. I have been using it medicinally since about 2002. My prescription is for control of Crohn's symptoms, but my neuro supports my use for spasms and nerve pain as well.

A good dispensary (I go to a co-op) will have folks who will be able to tell you which strains work better for spasms, pain, nausea, appetite, etc.
Sativa provides more of a cerebral or head "high" which can be good for pain where you need distraction.

Medicine produced from cannabis sativa plants have lower CBD and higher THC counts which produces a more clear headed, energetic type of high.*

There are two major reasons to consider different strains; medical benefits and physical effects. While sativa tends to have a lower level of effect, it is still used to treat many symptoms associated with chronic illness. Since the effect is less potent than indica, patients may prefer that they maintain some level of energy while also experiencing an increase in mood. However, the gentler effects may not treat all problems.**

Indica gets you more of a body "high" which can help with spasms, but can also relax you enough to get you sleepy.

Indica strain can be used to treat a larger number of ailments due to the more potent effect is has. While it can also work to relieve pain, increase appetite and lessen stress it has other uses as well. Inflammation and high eye pressure associated with glaucoma are often treated with indica strain. Indica has also been used in the treatment of muscle tension and spasms as well as seizures. This is accompanied by a much stronger effect, so this strain isn’t always preferred by those with more mild conditions.**

Sativa is often chosen for daytime use, and indica for symptom control and night time.
