I have used honey in it (before I cut out fructose).

Also a slice of candied ginger in it is very nice too.
Have you tried stevia? Some people believe stevia is safer.

You can get used to it without a sweetener, just don't steep so long..as the tannins get stronger with the longer steep.

There are other antioxidants too as well. I have good results with grapeseed extract.
