I've been going gray since I was 17. (my dad's hair went prematurely gray. He was graying by the time he was 22) I'm 41 now.

My hair isnt as bad as my dad's is. He was white headed by the time he was 45. The most gray I have is in my bangs. If I didnt color it, I'd have a splotch of white in the front of my bangs with a sprinkling of gray on the rest of my hair.

The guy who's been cutting my hair since I was 10yrs old colors my hair for me. Expensive, but I dont have to worry about making a mess at home, and I dont have to worry about accidentally turning my hair purple.

I think when I hit 50, I may stop coloring my hair. I only color my hair about 3 or 4 times a year. I'm bad about getting in to get my hair re-colored before the gray starts showing again.
