There is also a thing called the "golden mean" or "golden ratio".

This is the relationship between areas in a painting or drawing that appear pleasing and balanced to people. (this is where the psychology of perception comes in--which is good to know, as I suggested earlier).
The book The DaVinci Code went into this somewhat.

In your painting so far, the horizon is too high or a bit too low according to this concept. IF you lower your horizon you can do some designing with the clouds and some texture may work here, or sunrise/sunset colors etc. If you raise it, you can use waves and color instead for the elements. Remember the water often reflects the sky above.

Many artists do this naturally, but when you are a beginner it is good to know...then it will appear more naturally as you work from then on. (no one really expects you to go into the math of it, unless you want to be an architect! )

I think your ideas, Jo so far are good. All artists learn from every thing they do, so being open to that is very important.
