Yes, the song is immensely sad -- I can think of no sadder song. Keep in mind it touched MILLIONS of people.

You say, go back to the start -- The "song was exciting." Two ways to look at that:
The song of life truly, objectively speaking, WAS exciting, and now it is hell. Or...

The excitement was an ILLUSION. You cannot be DISillusioned unless you were illusioned in the first place -- it's impossible. Which makes the song about disillusionment. Which makes me ask: if that is the case, then how did the illusion get there in the first place? Society? Or, is it an innate part of individual growth? Something else?
