Way too much to explain in a post here.
One is a welfare program (SSI) and the amount can go up, down or stop, every month, depending upon your other income, your resources, where you live, who you live with. Lasts as long as you meeet the above requirements and continue to be disabled or are over age 65.
The other (SSDI) is not a welfare program and you get a fixed amount of money each month which is based on your lifetime earnings and FICA contributions. It can be affected by worker's comp or other public disability benefits and can stop if you are incarcerated. Lasts as long as you are disabled and unable to engage in substantial gainful activity.
Many SSI and SSDI recipients live in low income apartments.
