Prior Lake High School’s principal, who has been out on medical leave since October, has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and a form of brain dementia. ALS is commonly called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”

The Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board approved a request Monday for a long-term medical leave of absence for Dr. Craig Olson, a Shakopee resident.

Superintendent Tom Westerhaus said the board was asked to accept the medical leave with the understanding that Olson does not intend to return to the position of principal at the high school.“I think Dr. Olson has handled this matter with a great deal of pride and professionalism,” said Westerhaus.Olson began his medical leave on Oct. 30 after he received a preliminary diagnosis of a degenerative disease.

Last week, Olson received confirmation of his diagnosis.

ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The cause of ALS is not known, and there is no known cure or treatment. The board acknowledged Olson’s desire to resign from the principal position and to perhaps continue other work in the district as his health allows.

Acting principal Corey Lunn will continue to fill the role at the high school as the board develops and moves forward with the hiring of a new principal.

In a letter to parents of the district, Olson wrote: “Although lots of research is being done, these diseases don’t yet have any known cause or cure, so I am sad to report that I won’t be able to return to my role as high school principal.”
