But I'm not sure if they meant with med controlled pain and still hurting that bad, or if the meds worn off a bit early...and hurting that bad..

Is your breathing being affected - can't take full breaths?

some are given breathing exercises to do

A surgeon should have another surgeon covering for him while he is away.. not a nurse..I'd try to bypass and speak to another surgeon about the pain.
Or what about your regular Dr? surely they know you had surgery?
If the surgeon is still out of town?

Sometimes when the surgery is done the surgeon prefers to leave any issues to someone else... They specialize in cutting and that what they do.
Unfortunate but it seems to happen at times

The pain meds he sent me home with don't help at all. Any he says they are very strong. I was perscribed 10/325 for my hernia operation and let me tell you this pain is rougher than anything. I defiantly feel like I did get steamrolled by a truck you feel it everywhere. At first I did have breathing problems. It's better now just medication management is the problem. I unfortunately don't have a set family doctor I just have a clinic of specialists that we usually see. They are very conservative. I am miserable I don't sleep and am restless. I can't heal like this and I need o make that clear to my surgeon but I don't know mcj about medication Stronger than what I been taking (hydrocodone) any it's deff not helping.
