"Prolactin has many effects including regulating lactation and stimulating proliferation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells."
"Oligodendrocyte precursor cells in nervous tissue cells precede oligodendrocytes, and may also be able to generate neurons and astrocytes. The principal function of oligodendrocytes is to provide support to axons and to produce the Myelin sheath, which insulates and lowers the effective capacitance of axons. Myelin is 80% lipid and 20% protein and speeds the conduction of action potentials down the axon. Oligodendrocytes, unlike Schwann cells of the PNS, form segments of myelin sheaths of numerous neurons at once. The processes of a given oligodendrocyte wrap themselves around portions of the surrounding axons. As each process wraps itself around, it forms layers of myelin. Each process thus becomes a segment of the axon's myelin sheath."
"Pit-1 is a transcription factor that binds to the prolactin gene at several sites to allow for the production of prolactin in the pituitary gland. A key regulator of prolactin production is estrogens that enhance growth of prolactin-producing cells and stimulate prolactin production directly, as well as suppressing dopamine."
Conditions associated with elevated prolactin secretion:
Hyperprolactinaemia is the term given to having too-high levels of prolactin in the blood, which can result from:
Prolactinoma
Excess thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), usually in primary hypothyroidism
All SSRI and SNRI medications
Many antipsychotic medications
Emotional stress
Pregnancy and lactation
Some sexual disorders
So as I research, it seems SSRI's increase prolactin. Other drugs for increasing breast milk increase prolactin. This combined with progesterone needs studying. I had bad sweat issues with only 10mg's of Prozac. I've read a report once (posted it here) that said Prozac helped some with MS. The prolactin increase must be why. Women can increase oxytocin by stimulation which may lead to increased prolactin. Enough for tonight.
