Default Taxes

I know this question must have been asked numerous times, so please forgive me for asking it again. I have not been on here in a quite a while.

I know that if I am married filing jointly the amount of taxable income is $32,000 & over. I don't understand the 85% part...is only 85 % of it taxable? Our income in the $40,ooo range according to the thing that I got from Social Security. Some other place n that I googled said only half is taxed. My husband is on workers come, so accoring to our tax preparer, that is not taxable income...so the combined total is in the area of $40,000.

I am lost and I would appreciate anyone's advise. In advance, I thank you!
