My first real job was IN the home. I was 11 and it was my job to make sure the house was clean, and dinner was on the table when mom got home. I had chores before then, but once mom went back to work, I got the brunt of the house and NO ONE was happy esp me. My sis had an outside job baby sitting and would lie and say she had work on days she didnt want to help (which was often) and that left me holding the bag. I couldnt do after school activities because I had to get home.

My first real paid job was when I was 14 and ran away from home. I was allowed to stay for free in a broken down rental cottage if I kept the other ones clean. I was given a small amount of cash as well. The man was a harsh task master, and folks who stayed a week or a weekend in those lake side cottages were nasty! it was rare that someone left a tip, but you can bet they were quick to pick up the phone for fresh towels or the 12th roll of toilet paper. I did a good job, and was even taught how to do some basic repairs like a leaky sink or a plugged toilet, or how to change a lock. I learned alot there.
