Okay, first things first, when you say "I have no idea if the cable recorded anything" I assume you are talking about the Cable BOX??

Is your cable box a dvr? It really shouldn't matter. If your VCR is set to channel 3 (like all of mine are),and let's say you want to tape American Idol, which is shown on Channel 5, you would put your cable box on Channel 5 and and press the record button on your VCR. And you should the be recording American Idol. So when you put your cable box on a particular channel, and press the record button on your vcr, IT SHOULD BE RECORDING.

Is this not happening?
