When I read your post, you said you didn't like that your mother's household income was over the limit for some kind of household public assistance. I was just pointing out that was the problem with drawing a line - the limit puts some people on one side and some people on the other. Not sure how else it can be done.
Sorry your mom is having such a tough time.
Not sure it would be the right thing for your nephew, but miltary service has helped many young folks learn a skill, grow up, and get an education. Of course, there is always the chance of having to go to war. My neighbor's son is stationed at Eglin AFB in northwest Florida right now, working on ground communications - radio stuff - and is in college. This was after dropping out of high school when he turned 18.

I don't know, she told me that SSA told her that they base their decision for SSI on the total income of everyone in her house. This is before she even went to apply for food stamps. Like I said, I don't know how much her SSDI check is each month and I suppose with that and her survivors benefits from dad, she could be over the limit and misunderstanding SSA. The boy John did try to go in the Army. He went and signed up before he turned 18 and my parents signed for him. He wouldn't actually go on active duty until after he turned 18. He went to the induction center for the physical and they said he has shin splints, what ever that is. He also has an inner ear problem. He is actually healthy as a horse and as big as an ox. He wears a size 13 or 14 shoe. Many years ago, after my parents saved the kids from DHRS, their mother decided to follow some crack head up to South Carolina. John has been talking to his mother on the phone lately. He wants to go up there so my brother agreed to buy him a plane ticket and give him a little money to eat on for a while. This is his decision and he is over 18 so I don't guess we can stop him from going.
