Grant to aid research on Lou Gehrig's disease

OKLAHOMA CITY A foundation named for a Tulsa woman whose only daughter died of Lou Gehrig's disease is giving 100-thousand-dollars for research into the deadly disease.

The gift from the Jean Pape Adams Charitable Foundation based in Fredericksburg, Texas, is going to Kenneth Hensley of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

Hensley is studying whether acetaminophen can slow the progress of the disease which is formally known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or A-L-S. He's also examining whether the drug thalidomide might help extend the lives of patients with A-L-S.

Jean Pape Adams' daughter Judith Adams died of A-L-S in 1996.

Jean Pape Adams died in 2003 and the Adams Foundation was created a year later and contributes to charities and to national organizations conducting research on A-L-S.

The disease is named for New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig who also died of A-L-S.
