Hi Rae,

Fluoride is actually a component of toxic waste ... here is just a little snippet from the American Medical Association dated 1943...

The Journal of the American Medical Association, Sept. 18, 1943, states that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons — they inhibit enzyme systems, and water containing 1 part per million (ppm) or more fluoride is undesirable. This was the AMA's stand on fluoridation shortly before the U.S. Public Health Service endorsed nationwide fluoridation. (See 1-3).

Fluoride today is the same fluoride back then. In my opinion, it should never be promoted as a substance that promotes anything healthy. However, everyone has the right to make their own choices.

A very popular and well studied substance that actually increases salivary flow and decreases the incidence of tooth decay is called Xylitol. Here's a bit of info on that...http://www.xylitol.org/dental-benefits-of-xylitol

In the two offices that I work in as well as a general consensus amongst my colleagues who promote the use of Xylitol in their practices, we have all seen a decrease in tooth decay and gum disease with patients who use Xylitol daily. A company called Spry makes a chewing gum, mints, mouthwash, toothpaste....etc. There are other companies who make it also, but I am most familiar with Spry.

For so many years, in spite of the professional literature against the use of fluoride, many dentists still promote its use. One reason is because they have not read the literature on any substitute such as Xylitol. Another huge reason is because it's an easy money maker. The average charge to do an in office topical fluoride treatment is $35 to 55 per person, per cleaning. The fluoride product itself costs about $3.00 per bottle and the bottle lasts for several hundred applications. There are no lasting positive effects from the twice a year topical application but it can sure make you sick if you swallow it!

Rae, since you are concerned about using fluoride, perhaps you would be willing to try the Xyltiol? As a habit, I personally chew a piece of the Spry gum after every meal and I use the mints instead of eating sugar candy. Their products are delicious! A good web source for them is at vitacost.com. They have great prices on that site!

Hope this info is helpful... let us know what you think

I wanted to know the 'best/strongest' protecting toothpaste I could get my hands on.....and my dentist wrote a prescription for PreviDent 1.1% sodium fluoride. Super.

I just recently became privy to the fact that fluoride is actually very BAD for us!

The directions on this prescription says to brush for 1 minute and NOT to rinse.

Is this 'BAD' ??

The 'fine' print reads......"Description: Self-topical neutral fluoride 1.1% sodium fluoride for use as a dental caries (?) in adults. This is not a dentifrice."....

My main Q is this: What does fluoride do to us that is 'bad' ?

I know I could google this question, but I'd rather hear it from you..... because every time I get on google and start looking stuff up, I end up convinced I have 101 terminal diseases.....

Thank you much!
Rae
