He was the lunchtime speaker at an NPF/APDA YO meeting I went to in Reston a few years ago--2006 I think. He had us throwing our hands in the air (like a winning cyclist) at every little accomplishment, such as getting out of bed that morning. He told his Tour de France stories, revealing courage and character that were inspiring. To this day, if I successfully navigate steps with no railing, or mail the bills on time, I shout "Another victory!" Davis Phinney believes in celebrating even the little achievements, not necessarily in competition, but sincerely and often.
