I had costochondritis when I was 19 years old- left me hyperventilating and terrified in the ER. I figured I was too young for a heart attack, but I have always been (medically) the exception to the rule- when something happens to only 1% of the population, I am that 1%....nevertheless, I just didn't know anything about what was happening to me except that it HURT. BADLY.
They prescribed an NSAID called Dolobid, to which I had an allergic reaction, and then they gave 800mg Ibuprofen which did the trick. All in all, the condition lasted about 2 weeks, then gone.

Every once in a while, 20 years later, I get twitches of pain, but never again like that night.

Good luck!
