The folate is not so important as the B12 is.

Folate is easily absorbed in any fashion I believe. The B12 is not so easy. It needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Presence of food may block its absorption orally. People with intact working intrinsic factor probably will absorb better. It is those with poor intrinsic factor who need the empty stomach. Basically if you are here, with low B12, you need the best way to get the most from the oral version. So empty stomach wins as a best case scenario.
