Can I be honest here? I've been in that man's position, and for this reason I'm suspicious of strangers with a big smile who want to help me. It's always such a sweet surprise when they're sincere and their only agenda is to help. It ruins it for me, though, when they get to the sales pitch and feel the need to witness to me. It gives me the feeling the ONLY reason they smiled and helped me was to push their religion on me. It makes me feel used - because they helped me ONLY to make themselves feel good. Personally, I'd rather do without.

When the airline hostess asked what she had done, the story would have been so much better for me if her response would have been "I brushed his hair."
