When you have people in the house, try setting firm standards of only one person interacting with you ate a time. That person also has to be calm and slow with their speaking. It will be difficult to get kids to obey this but it is worth a try. Send one outside and sit quietly with the other as you explain this.

Visitors can be a nightmare. They always want to know how you are doing and tell you how everybody else is doing. This can quickly become information overload. My MIL is a problem for me, She just chats away and in a high pitched voice.

My daughter visits and after a few minutes, I need to leave the room and put my head phones on. My wife understands this and explains it for me. I usually just quietly walk away.

Some families/visitors feel the need to keep the conversation going. I like to just sit and comment from time to time as a though comes up. Boring for the visitor but safe for my brain. My mom lets me visit her this way. She will pick up a book to read or crossword puzzle. We will occasionally make comments as the thoughts come to mind.

My sister thinks there needs to be constant chatter. Even my wife can get worn out by her.

Try to identify your chatter threshold and work hard at communicating it and enforcing that limit.

Some guidelines might be.
No talking over the TV. That is what mute buttons are for.
No talking over someone else. NO interrupting.
No talking on the (cell) phone in front of PCS subject if the PCS subject is trying to do something.
No clattering of dishes or rustling of papers when PCS subject is attempting a task or comment.

These may sound harsh but it is for our own survival.

You can put together your own list.

Do you have a set of noise reducing head phones? I sometimes need to duck and cover my ears with them. I notice my eyes glazing over and run for cover. It is sometimes like I just fade away.

Hope you have a good day.
