It was my understanding that all sweetening agents stimulate the release of insulin. It has to do with signaling the hypothalamus.

I think with time Stevia will be added to the list. There are just no studies on it yet.

Aspartame has aspartic acid in it, which can stimulate pain receptors NMDA receptors.

I don't see how a little Splenda a day-- say one or 2 packets can be harmful. Some people become soda junkies... drinking large amounts of Diet Coke, Pepsi etc. Those are the ones to worry about.
The colas have high phosphate in them, specifically, and that may impact bone density.

I let the bubbles lapse in any soda-- before drinking. I tend to do ginger ale or lemon/lime sodas in the summer when it is hot.
