For me, both of my shoulder injuries upset my neck so it probably contributed to the degeneration occuring at the C5/6 levels. My neck problems dramatically improved after both of my shoulder surgeries (one on each side). I face a fusion of C5/6 in the near future but holding off as long as possible.
I can't say if the shoulder injuries help cause the neck problems but when the shoulder is injured, you compensate and this could lead to bad posture which would affect the neck.

Perhaps contributory but not the cause. Almost impossible to herniate a healthy normal disc (Kirkaldy-Willis).
