Mari,

If they did not take precaution when removing the old fillings, then yes, it can be the cause. Most dentist who specialize in mercury removal have specific procedures set up to minimize the mercury from getting into your system. And most will only remove one amalgam filling per month as a precaution. So if you had multiple ones removed in one month, then it can be overloading you system.
