Default RSD, ingrown toenails, and phenol?

Hi there,
I have RSD and a few months ago had an ingrown toenail, which I discussed on this forum. Well, now the nail has become ingrown again. One doc wants to just try again. The other advises killing off the little bit of troublemaking nail on the edge at the root so it wont grow back, using the caustic chemical phenol. Based on my googling this sounds like nasty stuff that among other things causes nasty chemical burns if it gets onto skin.

I don't want to
do anything that will aggravate the RSD or cause other problems. On the other hand I don't want to keep having to deal with this every few months. Anyone else had any experience with this? Thoughts?
