CBT - Cognitive behavior therapy - may be of great help with specifics for dealing with such situations and changing the outcome. There are workbooks on it, and that may be especially helpful combined with a therapist trained in CBT.

There is no doubt that the bipolar creates very strong emotions and thinking seems to have wings of their own. CBT helps you gain more control.
