If your mother had a hysterectomy and oopherectomy (ovaries removed), the sudden drop in estrogen and progesterone can make any woman feel like she was run over by a truck. I don't want to stereotype us women as we have been. We've been the brunt of hormone jokes forever, and that only trivializes a very real problem. Let's be honest, removal of these hormones opens the door for all sorts of problems, too many to list here. HRT is not appropriate for many.
