i'm so sorry what an awful day indeed. i hope you hear back from the parent and that things fall into place in that regard.

i think your sister/niece will be understanding. in the end you did give them an answer, it is not up in the air.

is it the driving that is too much for you to do on your own? i realize you have pain issues. do you have any options besides driving?
