Default Tic or seizure or what?

Hello,

My son, BJ, who is now 4-years-old was born with a rare combination of birth defects. They have been repaired and are stable at this time, but we have a new issue that has cropped up and doesn't seem to have anything to do with his original diagnosis.

Starting about three weeks ago he began excessively yawning. He might go for several hours without yawning and then have a few hours where he yawns an average of ever 25-seconds but sometimes even more frequently. He is otherwise normal and healthy with no other changes in his life.

We took him to the pediatrician who says it is most likely a tic. At my urging we did bloodwork which came back normal. We self-referred to a neurologist who ordered an EEG and that came back normal. Upon seeing his yawning in his office, the neurologist recommended a 24-48-hour inpatient EEG with video study. That will be done in two weeks.

Other than the yawning, he seems to be blinking a lot...but we figure that is due to his eyes watering from all that yawning. He has also been complaining about itching on his right hip and the side of his head.

I have several videos of the yawning on YouTube and can share the links once I am approved to post links and such.

Sooo...are we being paranoid and weird or is this as concerning as it feels?

Are there things we can do to better document what is going on? Things we should be tracking?

I felt like we just got his medical issues sorted out and now we've been broadsided by this new, weird thing. But maybe it's totally benign? A girl can hope!

Thanks,
Rebecca
