Getting rid of sugar and fructose and most starchy carbs is the first thing to do.

It all depends on your A1C and your fasting morning sugars.
Getting a glucometer and doing several readings during the day may help you target your problem areas and then you can taylor your diet more successfully.

Some people when fasting, get higher sugars, so beware of that.
It has to do with increased liver production of glucose during fasting.

The Zone diet is a good plan to follow. Many people with type II diabetes find it useful. It basically balances carbs with protein, so that you never get high insulin levels.
