You could have refused to change the dates, but the ALJ was telling you he'd have denied you if you had. You went with the safe decision, and I would have done the same if faced with the same dilema!
The glass half empty is that you're missing the backpay (not a trivial thing).
The glass half full is that because of your b-day it was easier for the ALJ to approve you!
