There are several forums here that you might want to check out....just scroll thru the main menu and jump in anywhere you feel inclined.
I can sure understand about the self-esteem thing. My dad was a military guy and I never felt like I could live up to his expectations. To this day I struggle with esteem issues. Hate to look at myself in the mirror. I've been let down by 'close' friends also, it's not a good feeling at all.
It's great to have you here. It'll be nice getting to know you!
