My daughter had a similar phenomenon during an episode of nystagmus. She couldn't practice her trombone because it looked like the music was bouncing around and she couldn't focus on it. I couldn't see any eyeball shaking just looking at her, but when I asked her to follow my finger from side to side, her right eyeball would slightly jerk and jump instead of going smoothly across.
