Excellent article. Lew Carpenter never had any reported concussions yet was found to have an advanced form of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). This means his brain was degenerating and shrinking.
The comments by Dr Robert Cantu are profound. He has been making these claims for about 25 years but nobody listened until the last few years.
Lew Carpenter lasted far longer than most football players with this injury and debilitating condition. Many end their own lives in their 40's.
There was an episode of Law and Order: SVU on this past Wednesday that featured Treat Williams as an ex star quarterback with a Superbowl victory. He had squandered his family's wealth and became sexually obsessed but did not remember any of his 'activities.' It shows him with a note in his wallet that says, "CALL WIFE." It is a reminder that when police ask for his ID, that he needs to call his wife and call an attorney.
The TV shows are portraying CTE and other concussion related disabilities, degenerative conditions and even deaths with factual information.
These are the kinds of lifelong risks we face if we do not limit the risk of further concussions.
It is tragic to see these TV shows but they do get the message across.
