Yep, mrsD is right , has to be the right kind & same speed.
If the old one has the same kind it could work, but also you have to have open slots in the new one.

And opening a new computer usually voids the warranty!!

3 gigs should be fine for what you use it for.

More would be needed if doing heavy graphics/gaming etc.
