It is hard going from honors to having problems in class. It may be that his physical symptoms are preventing him from taking in information. Think about it feel like to read when you are dizzy or can't see well...

I would suggest talking to the school about academic support. He may need things like some tutoring that the shool can provide, extra time on tests. It may be that he needs to cut back his workload. The shcool should be able to help on all of these things and more. There are resources for people in the educational system. That would be the first thing to do assuming that the right place for him right now is in school. Everyone is different. That would be a good place to start.
