I think the first thing to try is magnesium.
Either soak in the bathtub with about 4-6 oz of epsom salts, and warm water (not hot), or take a quality magnesium supplement or use the topical magnesium lotion.
I really gobbed the lotion on my right knee last night out of desperation, I had so much pain in it (Low Pressure weather yesterday) last night... and it worked!
