Hi ILC,

Sometimes they extract all of the teeth at once, sometimes they extract just the top at one visit and the lower at a second visit. Depends on how many teeth are involved and the condition of the teeth.

Most dentists prefer to insert the immediate denture at the time of the extractions. The denture acts as a bandade over the surgical areas protecting them from food debris. The immediate denture is also like a template to help form the bone and gum tissue to the shape of a denture as the areas heal to help create a better fit with the permanent denture.

It is important to have a nutritious diet prepared ahead of time which would consist of soft foods like the consistency of scramble eggs, rice pudding, oatmeal....homemade soup.. things like that. A soft food diet is generally best for the first 4-6 weeks and then <<gradually>> incorporate more solid foods depending on the comfort. The dentures will feel like a mouthful and eating, speaking, chewing will be somewhat challenging in the beginning. So the more prepared the person is with their diet, the easier it will be to get use to the denture. If the person struggles with food at the onset, their tolerance level diminishes and they get frustrated withthe whole thing.

Whatever questions you have... feel free to ask here

he will need to have all of his remaining teeth extracted. do they usually do this in one visit? how long should it take before he gets his set of dentures?

any information anyone can give us would be much appreciated. thanks!
