Yes, this straightforward, no-nonsense approach has worked well for me too. But some stylists/barbers get it more than others do. I lucked out in finding my last hairstylist, who likes to work slowly, patiently, meditatively, almost entirely with scissors, no abrupt movements, hair-tugging, head-rubbing, etc (and she does a great job). Her salon is quiet and pleasant.
